Il Cibo di Venezia -part 1

We've had some great food in Venezia -we forgot to photograph most of it :)  The most memorable being Bigoli in salsa (wholemeal spaghetti with anchovy salsa) and Ravioli con funghi porcini (porcini & ricotta ravioli with a salsa made with porcini mushrooms) which Rob's cousin Rosaria made -they were both absolutely delicious and both my favourite types of pasta.

We've tried to eat local specialties and shared a plate of seafood cichetti at an osteria in San Vio, Dorsoduro -Osteria del Vecio Forner a few days ago.  The deep fried seafood was in a very light, non- greasy batter and was delicious as was the white polenta and insalata caprese that we also had.

The tramezzini and caffe at La Toletta in Via Dorsoduro 1191 are delicious and there is an amazing variety, they also have panini:
In Cannaregio we tried Pasta fagioli and Seppie Veneziana, carciofi  and Insalate miste which were ok and the restaurant -Trattoria all' Antica Mola was a welcome break from the rain.

Our favourite pasticceria in Venezia so far is Pasticceria Tonolo which is probably a bad thing as it is about five doors away from us and each day we have been starting the day with a typical Italian breakfast -coffee and a pastry. We're not quite working our way through their cakes -they have so many that we'd have to be here for about a year :) Everything that we have tried so far has been great -bigne filled with chocolate cream would have to be the best. The coffee is also brilliant. I think that i might be starting to find the 11 kgs that I lost before we left :)  We walk for about 5 or so hours each day so hopefully I won't put back too much.

Ogni mattina: un caffe' e un caffe' macchiato

We went to the markets at the Rialto today and bought some prawns and carciofi -just the bases and garlic etc.  We're going to Treviso tomorrow and I'm hoping to do cook them when we get back with some pasta.

Il nostro appartamento a venezia

We have been really lucky with our apartment in Venezia, it is absolutely perfect for us.  It's a great location and very comfortable, also it is really quiet -especially after Rome where we were on a busy street.  These are a few photos of the apartment and the views from the windows.  We overlook Ponte Vinanti.

Rob ha fatto la Maratona di Venezia!!!!!

Rob finished the Marathon YAY!!!! We had an early start (we were up at 4.30am) then a train ride to Mestre and then a bus ride to Stra for Rob and then the long 42.2kms back to Venezia for Rob.

It sounded like a pretty tough course with the bridges at the end, but Rob said that it was all very well organised and the Italian  people in towns along the way were fabulous -really encouraging and lots of music, live bands etc.

He was pretty happy with his run and all went well apart from a difficult spell when he had severe cramping in his legs.  He finished which was great and given that he only managed to get in one run a week training at home maybe it's time to write a book on how to run the Venice Marathon on one run a week -when you're 58!  I think his head was always going to make it, the legs were a different story.

His time was just over 5 hours -Jules and Sarah were able to follow his progress online as info from the chip on his racing bib was immediately posted to the marathon site.  They knew more about his run than I did as I was waiting at the race end on Riva Degli Schiavoni.

The photos start with waiting for the bus in Mestre -in the cold; the finishing line, Rob with cousins Michele and Francesca (who kindly came to the finish line), Rob & me on the Ponte Vinante outside our apartment and the medal!!

A few photos from our first days in Venice

The 14 bridges at the end of the course sound horrible -just what you need when you're tired.  Rob picked a difficult course for an Italian marathon!
